There is more stress today than ever before. Sometimes it may feel like stress is going to be a permanent part of your life and you might as well learn to live with it. But there are ways that you can manage the stress in your life, even if you cannot completely eliminate it. You may not always be able to control the amount of stress that you experience, but you can control how you handle it and how it affects you.
Stress management is important to learn. It can make the difference between struggling through your day with everything bothering you or handling your daily chores, responsibilities and routine with a calm and peaceful attitude.
Ways to Manage Stress So That It Will Not Control You
1. One way that you can manage the amount of stress in your life is to stay away, when possible, from those people, places and activities that are a source of anxiety for you. For example, if the news distresses you, consider turning off the TV or the radio and not picking up the newspaper. Stay away from topics of conversation that can easily rile you, and if someone else starts talking about something you would rather not discuss, steer the conversation in another direction.
2. Do not overextend yourself by offering your services for everything that crosses your path. If your to-do list is overflowing and you say yes to something that does not absolutely require your services, you are already creating a stressful situation that could have been avoided.
3. Try to set a little bit of time aside each day for just relaxing, even if it is only fifteen minutes. Stress management is easier when you take time for yourself. You may want to listen to some soothing music or read a chapter in your favorite novel. Or you may just want to close your eyes and do absolutely nothing for that short period of time. Whenever you find yourself with a longer portion of free time, use it doing something that will be enjoyable, such as taking your pet for a walk, working in the garden or taking a leisurely bath.
4. If a part of your house is causing you stress, change it. You may have clutter in your bedroom that creates a chaotic environment and is helping to keep you awake at night. Stress management can involve making changes in the room by removing clutter that is keeping your bedroom from being restful and soothing. Hang drapes or curtains at the window that block out distracting light during the nighttime hours. Even consider painting the room in restful colors.
5. When a stressful situation presents itself, adopt a more positive attitude when viewing the occurrence. Ask yourself how important this situation is going to be one year from now. If stressing out over the problem is not going to change the outcome, then it is wasted energy that you would be able to put to better use elsewhere.
6. Do not try to control situations that you cannot do anything about. Unpleasant things will occur in everyone’s life. It is a part of being alive and human. Adopt a calm attitude toward the situation, reassuring yourself that everything happens for a reason. If you feel yourself getting upset or anxious over an event, take a deep breath and adjust your attitude in order to view the situation in a calmer way. Adversity paves the way for personal growth.
